The legal team was taking a chance but a winning one it proved to be. The other side moved on the jurisdiction issue and 'we promptly withdrew and told the judge that we were happy to withdraw. That was a Friday and the judge said that he would release it on Monday. We had tickets to Patna and, when we moved the high court there, the court said that it needed confirmation that the matter had indeed been withdrawn in Allahabad. Telephone lines being what they were in those days, it was almost impossible to get the lawyer who was in court in Allahabad handling the withdrawal. After great difficulty I got him over a very poor connection and got, what I thought was, a confirmation that the case had been withdrawn. I told Manuda that I had confirmation. He went to court and argued the matter and we got a stay. He went home to rest and well after that I got a call from the lawyer from a clear line and he said that what he was trying to say was that the judge did not sit that day and the case would be withdrawn the next day.

'I did not know what to do. I tried to get in touch with S.S. Ray but Triloki, his assistant, had instructions not to disturb him. So I called up Mrs Ray, who was with him and told her that Manuda would have to be woken up in a matter of great urgency. She did so and when he heard what had happened S.S. Ray was furious. However, we decided to go to the judge's house and explained what had happened. The judge respected S.S. Ray's position and agreed to let the stay continue'.

The 1970s also marked the beginning of the firm's relationship with the Goenkas and Mr R.P Goenka. 'He was a leader in industry and his association brought the firm to a new plane. With the growth of industry and commerce, many new business houses emerged and the firm was fortunate to continue to enjoy their confidence and support. Their support led to Haigreve attaining maturity in the profession and success', says Pinto Khaitan. Mr R.P. Goenka himself recalls: 'B.M. Birla asked me to meet B.P. Khaitan, when I was one of the two arbitrators for Surajmull Nagarmull and B.M. Birla was the umpire. I took B.P. Khaitan's guidance to resolve the matter'. As far as the next generation is concerned, it was not till the 1970s that RPG came in touch with Bhagwati Prasad's son and soon transferred all his business to KCo. No better testimonial is required.
